About Our Deputy Mayor

H.E. Adanech Abiebie is committed to making sure every Addis Abebian gets a fair shot in a growing and prosperous Addis Ababa. Her administration is focused on making Addis Ababa’s prosperity more inclusive, advancing AA values, and building safer, stronger, and healthier neighborhoods across Addis Ababa 11 sub-cities.

Addis Ababa is unique in the Ethiopia’s political system – the mayor, AA’s chief executive, and functions as a governor, county executive, and mayor. Like governors, Mayor Adanech Abiebie runs Health Bureau, Education Bureau, issues driver’s licenses, and has Tax Authority. Like county executives, the Mayor runs the local jail, and, unlike most mayors, also oversees the public school system.

In 2020, Addis Ababa is home to 5.5M people across 68 square miles, has a AAA bond rating, and an annual budget of more than 15 billion Birr.

On August 18, 2020, Adanch Abiebie became the first woman ever elected as the Mayor of Addis Ababa and the first mayor to earn residences’ approval in over a decade. She is the 32nd mayor of the city since its inception in 1910. Since taking office, the Mayor has taken bold steps to reset Addis Ababa’s global and national competitiveness, speed up issuing affordable housing process, diversify the Addis Ababa economy, increase satisfaction in city services, and invest in programs and policies that allow more families to live and thrive in Addis Ababa.

In the past five months, Mayor Adancech Abiebie has:

  • Added more than 179,000 jobs, reduced unemployment by 6 percent, and increased Addis Ababa Government’s annual spending with local businesses by 8 million Birr;

  • Chaired the Housing Bureau, increased the city’s affordable housing, and set a bold goal to build 26,000 new homes by 2022;

  • Deployed the first food security program;

  • Collaborated with other organizations investors to advance recycling and reduce waste management system;

  • Led diplomatic and economic collaboration with France, Israel, Canada, and the United States;

Prior to becoming Mayor in 2020, Adanch Abiebie served as Attorney General and Minister of Revenue and Custom Commission. During her public service she served as the Chairwoman of the Committee on Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation, National Bank of Ethiopia, and COVID- 19 Working group among others. She passed legislation to build the new stadium, and secured from the federal government the best portion of the Abebe Bekila Stadium for Addis Ababa. She also created a comprehensive ethics reform and increased transparency in government contracting.
